The Cells in your body are composed of 75% WATER!

Water sustains all life on planet earth – knowing this one should want to drink only the cleanest most nutritious water possible. For many this may mean you have to use a filter to remove some common additives and pollutants which are unfortunately tainting our water supply.

Drinking fresh clean water promotes positive brain function, digestive system, immune response and overall good health.

I have gotten many questions about how one can remove harmful chemicals and bacteria from their tap water and needless to say there is a lot of confusion about which filters to use. Below you will find purchase information for the filter I personally use and recommend to filter Fluoride and other harmful additives from your tap water.  There are more product variations available on the Berkey website, but by purchasing from you support the local effort to remove fluoride and are guaranteed to recieve the right product to remove it for yourself!

The versatile Big Berkey® system is the ideal system for use at home with small or medium sized families, travel, outdoor activities or during unexpected emergencies.

This powerful system purifies both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations may be substandard at best. Perfect for everyday use, outdoor activities and a must in hostile environments where electricity, water pressure or treated water may not be available.

The Big Berkey® system removes viruses, pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites and extracts harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222 and trihalomethanes. It also reduces rust, silt, sediment, foul taste and odors and unhealthy minerals such as lead and mercury. This system is so powerful it can remove red food coloring from water without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs. Virtually no other system can duplicate this performance.

Constructed of highly polished 304 stainless steel, the system comes complete with two purification elements and utilizes the latest technological advances. This system has a storage capacity of about 2.25 gallons (8.5 liters) and when in use it stands 19.25″ in height with a diameter of 8.5″. The upper chamber nests within the lower chamber for transport and stands only 13″ in height.

Configured with two Black Berkey® purification elements the system will purify up to 3 1/2 Gallons (13.3 liters) per hour*. This system can be expanded to use four purification elements and is capable of purifying up to 7 Gallons (26.5 liters) per hour*.

*Flow rate calculated with upper chamber full to top. Flow rate decreases as water level declines

PF2 Optional Fluoride Filter Elements

PF-2 reduction elements are designed for use in conjunction with Black Berkey® water purification elements to adsorb the following unwanted elements found in drinking water.

• Fluoride
• Arsenic V and pre-oxidized Arsenic III
• Other residual heavy metal ions

FLUORIDE: Testing for fluoride was based on 20-30ppm of the ion in the influent aqueous solution at a flow rate of no more than 3 gpm (11 lpm) per cubic foot of media. Results of < 1ppm of the fluoride ion in the effluent were typical for the media (>95% reduction). Under optimum conditions, effluent concentrations of less than 50 ppb were readily achieved (>99.75% reduction).

ARSENIC: This product uniquely targets the entire family of arsenic oxide anions as well as the arsenic cations.

Under normal conditions it is recommended that each set of two PF-2 elements be replaced after 1,000 gallons (3,785 liters). The Royal Berkey® system is about 3.25 gallons (12.3 liters) therefore the PF-2 filters should be replaced after 1,000/3.25 (3,785/12.3) or 307 refills. If the system is refilled about one time per day, the PF-2‘s should be replaced after 10 months, if the system is refilled about twice per day, the PF-2‘s should be replaced about every five months). Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of fluoride, arsenic and heavy metals may reduce the capacity and efficiency of the elements.

1) Do not boil this element.

2) PF-2 elements reduce filtration flow rate by 15-20%.

3) Our original tests were done using gravity alone to purge the PF-2 elements. Since then, we have added a step by using purging buttons which are much more efficient at removing any residual process dust from the PF-2 media. The test does not distinguish between activated alumina (Al2O3) and Aluminum (Al). So we had to use the total count of aluminum and activated alumina in our tests.

4) The media used in the PF-2 filter elements contains high-grade activated alumina (Al2O3), which currently is the most efficient media available for extracting fluoride from water. Activated alumina is inert. Below are the results we obtained when testing the PF-2 elements (the water was not pre-filtered through the Black Berkey® elements). The reduction over time is due to additional residual process dust being washed free from the PF-2 elements as the system is used. To give a scale for comparison purposes we include test results from a national brand toothpaste and water boiled in an aluminum pan.

• National brand toothpaste 52.878 ppm aluminum
• Water boiled in an aluminum pan for five minutes: 2.791 ppm aluminum
PF2 after conditioning (5 cycles): .178 ppm aluminum
PF2 after 10 Cycles: .037 ppm aluminum
PF2 after 20 Cycles: .029 ppm aluminum

While the above results indicate that the residual process dust adds a minute amount of activated alumina to the water, the Black Berkey® purification elements reduce aluminum from the water. We tested water that naturally contained .320ppm aluminum and filtered it through the combination of the Black Berkey® and the post conditioned PF-2 filtration elements (5 cycles). The results showed a net reduction in aluminum contamination (Raw influent: .320ppm – Effluent after passing through the Black Berkey® and PF-2 elements: .232ppm). Again, the standard tests cannot distinguish between aluminum (Al) and activated alumina (Al2O3), which is inert. Nevertheless, the tests showed a net reduction by the Black Berkey® element in the combination of naturally occurring aluminum plus any residual activated alumina (Al2O3)process dust from the PF-2 elements.

  2. Amy Rogers says:

Zero Water sells a water pitcher that filters all the bad junk out of your water – chemicals/pharmaceuticals, etc. It’s the only pitcher that will remove that stuff. It’s all I will drink. You should give it a try. It comes with a digital water tester too so you can make sure your water is clean.

  3. My post went away. Anyway, I was saying try the zero water pitchers. Its what we use at home and they remove fluoride, chemicals and drugs from your water. Its all we drink and it comes with a digital water tester so you can test all your water you drink to make sure it’s clean. You can find them on facebook. I bought mine at walmart and we have one we keep in the fridge, one on the counter for coffee and tea and one in the bathroom. Love it!

    • Hi Amy,

I’m pretty sure that ZeroWater doesn’t remove fluoride, though it does remove solids, etc. It’s amazingly difficult to remove fluoride from water, and there are only a few tools on the market that can, the above-mentioned Big Berkey being one. Reverse osmosis also will do it, but there are detriments to that method as well. Just another good reason not to put it in our water in the first place, right?
